It's just sooooo good. You can't help but get sucked into the story. I was so emotionally drained after this, but in the best possible way.

This book is a standal I was thrilled to be asked to beta read for Samantha. This book is a standalone, but you are going to want read the entire series, because it is just that good.

Nov 25, Autumn rated it it was amazing. Amazing This was my first book I've read by this author. I didn't read the first two books of this series which was completely ok, there were not any parts missing that took away from the story.

Black Roses is one of those rare books that give you all the feels. Great characters, there are sensitive subjects but it was so well written.

Although I loved the two main characters, Mason and Piper, I fell in love with her best friend Charlie and was so happy she would be getting her own story.

Seriously rough reading. But also so freaking fantastic! Apr 02, Bev rated it it was amazing Shelves: fight-that-fall-baby , unputdownable , emo-reads , favourites , bloody-loved-it , perfect-hero.

I admit I was a little nervous to read this as I wasn't too sure about Piper after seeing a bit of her in her sisters books. Piper is a runner - literally and figuratively.

Add to that she was a bit of a bitch for the early part of the book and yeah, I definitely wasn't too sure about Piper. Her first meeting with Mason didn't go too well, she snarled and he snapped.

And I love that he stood up to her. Mason was, for me, the perfect hero. He was gentle, understanding, so patient and could read be I admit I was a little nervous to read this as I wasn't too sure about Piper after seeing a bit of her in her sisters books.

He was gentle, understanding, so patient and could read between the lines so he just "got" Piper. And as the story unfolds and it's revealed why Piper is how she is I got her too.

My God, that any child should endure what she did doesn't bear thinking about. He was so open with her, he knew she needed that and when he shared his past without playing on it so no drama my heart melted into goo.

Again, for a youngster to have to endure that loss and come through the other side not only a totally head-screwed-on-the-right-way amazing man, but a fantastic father too.

She made him work for it and he didn't give up, not once regardless of what she threw at him. I loved seeing him earn her trust, seeing her slowly opening up to him and accepting and believing in him.

There was a little hiccup towards the end thanks to Cassidy, but for a book that could have jumped on the whole woe is me drama train, kudos to the author for not taking the story there.

We got to catch up again with the couples from the previous books and all this was finished off with an epilogue that left me hugging my Kindle.

Oh, and the promise of Charlie's story. Eek, so stoked about that bit of news. After this series I'm thinking I'll read Ms.

I thought this was really good. Piper has some major issues. But I could understand why. I like that she had this tough girl act but then something would trigger her and you would see the wounded soul.

Piper and Mason were perfect for each other. They healed each other. Mason was so patient and sweet with Piper trying to help her to overcome what happened to her.

I did not read the first two books but now I want to. Charlie has her own book too. I want to read her book as well.

Overall I was v I thought this was really good. Overall I was very happy with this read. Will be checking out more books by this author.

I have read the first two books in this series and through them both my heart ached to know Pipers story. Mason and Pipers story was hard to read at times but so beautiful I ached.

Both characters had a past that made you crave to just grab them and hug them. I love that Mason was the man that finally was able to bring Piper home.

They just made my heart sing. Plus we have a hot single dad. The last sentence of this story made me cry. It was the perfect way any to end this story.

I also loved seeing the other Mitchell sisters. Dec 11, Anjie rated it liked it Shelves: I wanted to like this so much, especially after reading Lexi and Kyle's story but this fell flat.

I loved Mason. He was amazing. He was kind and patient and funny. I didn't like Piper. For most of the book I tolerated her.

I understand why she was the way she was but I just generally don't like rudeness and boy was she rude to Mason. I understand that as well but I didn't like it.

What I don't understand was how rude she was to her own family, especially when her sisters were left in the dark ov I wanted to like this so much, especially after reading Lexi and Kyle's story but this fell flat.

What I don't understand was how rude she was to her own family, especially when her sisters were left in the dark over what happened to her.

It wasn't like it was their fault or anything. The positive traits of her personality couldn't overshadow the negatives for me.

Jul 15, Barbara Strickland rated it really liked it. Full of emotional upheveals This was surprisingly good.

I wondered if the author hadn't tried to cram too much into the plot especially as it revolves around one family but it worked.

What kept me reading was the fact that neither of Piper's sisters noticed there was such major trauma going on so close to home but unfortunately this is too often the truth in families, even close ones.

That she finds Mason and has her happy ending soothes the savage everyday beasts that roam the normality of reade Full of emotional upheveals This was surprisingly good.

Apr 26, Laura Brown rated it it was amazing. LOVED this book! It kept me guessing the whole time. I love how independent and stubborn Piper is. I did think that they were both painted to be very mature for their 22 years.

But with what happened to them both they did have to grow up quickly. Great story with trauma, loss, and love. May 04, Myra Boles rated it it was amazing.

The story in this book was so heartbreaking to me. Piper is one of the strongest, most amazing women that I have ever met and Mason is one of the most gentle, caring, "manly man" heroes that I have ever met.

The two together are a dream come true in Piper's story. Not only is there heartbreak, but you will find LOVE, angst, happiness, laughter, awe, anger, sadness, But i think best of all Apr 22, Tanya rated it it was amazing.

My god I got sucked in and could not put it down. Piper was a beautiful soul. She was so troubled and guarded.

She had a horrible traumatic event happen to her. She kept reliving it and having nightmares. I felt for her. It broke my heart.

In spite of that she was strong, determined, loving, loyal and one hell of a lady. Never dates Mason was wonderful. He was living with is own troubles.

When Piper and Mason meet its not love at first sight that is for sure. They do not get off to a good start. There is name calling, antagonizing each other and making un true assumptions about the other.

Although they keep getting under each others skin. Before you know it there is a gradual like to love story happening.

Mason has to get threw Pipers walls she has up. Getting her to open up and trust him. That's when the beauty happens. They do have great chemistry.

The story flows smoothly. I believed in the story and Piper and Mason. I cried, laughed and yelled. There is everything you could want in this book.

Touchy subjects are told with such care that I felt I knew Piper I wanted to be there for her. This story touched my heart. I would recommend this story to everyone.

I will continue reading Samantha Christy she knows what she is doing Apr 05, Shirley rated it it was amazing Shelves: top-reads After meeting Piper in the previous books you just know something bad happened to her and I was chomping at the bit to find out what.

I did end up really liking her and I loved seeing her grow throughout the book. Mason, oh Mason what a hero he turned out to be. He was patient, loving, understanding and he really got Piper and her issues.

He had every reason to be an emotional runner himself but he continuity stuck by her gaining her trust and slowly but surely helping her blossom in to a confident sexy woman.

Along with two biographies on Magda Goebbels and a diary written about the Nazi elite in by a Jewish reporter that was referenced in the book.

This was an interesting read.. Who does that in a library book? Someone who read it in with a lot of repr I always think I've found a good book when it causes me to order other books on the topic.

Someone who read it in with a lot of repressed anger and issues with how the "whores in " dress similarly to the Nazi wives and actresses. I rather felt chastised just in reading the book by the scathing sermon I got from the prior library patron.

The book isn't scandalous. It's about Clara Vine's escape from a marriage proposal and a family who has fallen apart after her mother's death.

She receives an offer to act in a movie in Berlin. A series of events puts her into the company of Magda Goebbels and other wives of the Nazi elite.

Clara is soon recruited to aid the British intelligence. When Magda pulls Clara into her confidence with a request. Clara finds her situation in Germany vastly changed and she must move cautiously.

I was intrigued with political and social situation in prewar Germany. It makes one wonder how it all could happen, yet the conditions are outlined leading up to it.

Sep 14, Jacki Julia Flyte rated it really liked it. The Nazi party have just swept to power and adulation for Hitler is riding high.

Meanwhile Jewish business are being persecuted and enemies of the State disappear on a regular basis. Into this world steps Clara Vine, a young English actress who has come to Berlin in search of work.

Fluent in German thanks to her German mother and bearing the right credentials thanks to her father's political beliefs, she quickly finds work in the film industry.

Before long she has attracted the att Berlin, Before long she has attracted the attention of the Nazi elite and is mingling with the wives and girlfriends of Goebbels, Goering and von Rippentrop.

Then she meets Leo Quinn who is working in British Intelligence, and who asks her to spy on her new friends and report back to him.

While Clara agrees, she quickly realises that she has put herself into an extremely dangerous position. This is an interesting story set in a fascinating time in history.

Like Philip Kerr coincidentally the author's husband , Thynne has skilfully woven real people and events into the book which gives it a tantalising sense of possibility.

There were plot elements that I thought were stretching credibility too far such as Magda Goebbels' Jewish step father , but in fact this is perfectly true.

I really liked the way the book transported me into Berlin at that time and I felt like I was browsing fashions in Wertheim's, driving through pine forests around Potsdam, trying to spot tails on the U-Bahn.

The way that the tension ratchets up over the course of the book is also very well done. While overall I liked this book, there are problems with it.

The story moves quite slowly for some time and spends too much time on a couple of secondary characters who are only marginally relevant to the overall story although they do give us a greater perspective on the changes in Germany at that time.

Also, the ending was a disappointment. Would she meet a violent end, would she escape back to England, would her friendship to Magda hold out?

Without giving anything away, the author has deliberately left some things up in the air for a sequel - which yes, I will read, but I feel a little "played".

Jan 04, Alison rated it really liked it. Essentially this story is a well-paced, atmospheric historical thriller packed with glamour, sex, intrigue and violence, upper class English snobs and Nazi bullies, and artistic, slightly louche cinema actors and producers of UFA studio, sprinkled with rather less glamorous and very frightened Jewish Berliners.

It kept my attention to the last page. Ms Thynne knows her period very well; her research on s Berlin is thorough and intimate and she drops the detail in very deftly.

The author has the ability to describe the high fashion clothing and jewellery of powerful women and the tackiness of those not so well off so beautifully, while imbuing the whole narrative with the systemically violent atmosphere of the time.

Clara was sympathetically drawn and made intelligent without being over-clever. This is an enjoyable read; I would recommend it to a friend.

I will be looking out for the next one in the series. I really really love this book. I had read the second one first, not knowing it was a series so I ordered this book as well after I couldn't find it in any bookshop how this is not constantly in print and on the shelves is a total mystery to me, but oh well.

Anyway it was well worth the wait and I would have read it in one go if I would have had the time but life got in the way.

The story starts with a young Clara who feels its time for something else and goes to Berlin to learn more about her I really really love this book.

The story starts with a young Clara who feels its time for something else and goes to Berlin to learn more about her German mothers life before she moved to England.

To make a living she hopes to be an actrice. Sadly however is not the right time to go and live in Germany because a certain Herr Hitler has come into power only months before.

At first, like many others, Clara is not fully aware of the trouble this new order will bring for both herself and the rest of the world.

Sadly however it doesn't take long for the reality to sink in and soon Clara finds herself in His Majesty's secret service. Spying on the wives of the Nazi elite, who themselves had this horribly complicated and contradicting life.

The characters, the setting and the plot are all so realistic that you can't help but being drawn into the book.

I love it. Sep 15, Eileen rated it really liked it Shelves: world-war-ii. This novel was set in Berlin during the time the Nazis were coming to power.

He saw in fashion a way that women might contribute to strengthening the nation by embracing German style — dirndls and plaits and such!

Magda Goebbels headed the program. British intelligence, enthralled to find such a golden opportunity for eyes and ears among the prominent Nazi wives, is most persuasive.

It was well researched and many who actually lived are found within the pages. Upon finishing, I was surprised to learn that that there is a sequel just out, and I must have it!

Mar 18, Rebecca H. I love a good anti-nazi spy novel with a strong female lead. This one does not disappoint. Really enjoyed this and can't wait to start the next one in the series.

I saw Black Roses in a BookBub email and clicked the link because it sounded like my catnip all the way; plus, a gorgeous cover and interesting back blurb, and I was sold.

And for the most part, the reality lived up to my expectations. Clara is determined to become an actress in spite of, or perhaps because of, the opposition of her family and friends.

At a party, an acquaintance mentions a filmmaker n I saw Black Roses in a BookBub email and clicked the link because it sounded like my catnip all the way; plus, a gorgeous cover and interesting back blurb, and I was sold.

At a party, an acquaintance mentions a filmmaker named Max Townsend and a movie he plans to film in Berlin, so on a sudden whim, Clara leaves for Berlin without telling her family.

The year is and Hitler has just come to power. The Nazi Party is busy entwining its poisonous tentacles into all areas of German life, and that includes the film industry.

To her amazement, Clara finds herself hobnobbing with the wives of the Nazi elite, particularly Magda Goebbels. Clara, with her good looks and figure, is quickly pursued by a Nazi officer, Klaus Müller.

I found the first part of the book a little slow, but that was due to the historical foundation it lays. And speaking of the historical events, Black Roses is very well researched.

It is undoubtedly tricky to mix fictional and actual historical people together in a work of fiction, but Ms. Thynne did a good job. According to her note at the end, even some of the dialogue is factual, taken from letters, diaries and other primary source documents.

I will be reading the other books in the series just as soon as Amazon can get them to me. Sep 13, Novelle Novels rated it liked it.

Getting involved with the women close up the nazis thus hitlers top men she is in so deep. She becomes friends with Magda goebbels which as we all know was so close to hitler, dangerous to say the least.

When Clara meets Leo Quinn, an undercover British intelligent agent she gets recruited to spy on her new acquaintances.

Personally I found this very hard to get into which made it tough to keep picking up but when I did it then became interesting.

Aug 11, David Lowther rated it really liked it. A friend recommended a Clara Vine novel two or three years ago and I read and enjoyed it without realising its part of a series.

So, here I am at the start of the Clara Vine books. Black Roses is very good. We're in Berlin in the spring of and the Nazis have just seized power.

Clara arrives from England having been promised a role in a film about to be made at the legendary UFa studios just outside Berlin.

Simultaneously Goebbels has taken over control of the studios as part of his propagan A friend recommended a Clara Vine novel two or three years ago and I read and enjoyed it without realising its part of a series.

Simultaneously Goebbels has taken over control of the studios as part of his propaganda empire. Clara becomes involved with all kinds of Nazis, including the club footed sadist himself.

She also meets an MI6 agent who persuades her to work for her homeland. What follows is an engrossing tale with action, intrigue, chase sequences and a whole host of interesting characters and locations.

Looking forward to the next. David Lowther. Sep 12, Christina McLain rated it liked it. An absorbing and fascinating take on the Third Reich and the way it treated women.

Apr 22, Amy Street added it. This started well with a prologue that really grabbed my attention, but then it just went flat.

It did pick up towards the end , but by that time I was page counting to get to the end. Ending wasn't bad.

Black Roses is incredibly well-researched and detailed. Set in Clara leaves England, and a boyfriend behind who expects her to marry him and to give up her dreams of being an actress, in search of a part in a new film called Black Roses.

Whilst at the film studios she meets two of Goebbels aides who invite her and another young actress to a party where they are then introduced to Magda Goebbels, a woman consumed by the drama of her own existence.

As Clara becomes more and more involved i Black Roses is incredibly well-researched and detailed. As Clara becomes more and more involved in the Nazi wives lives Magda takes a shine to Clara and starts to trust her.

The story starts with the death of a young girl who had fallen or was she pushed from a window. This is an excerpt from early on in the book talking about the rise of the Third Reich and of Clara's situation.

Who could have foreseen how quickly things would change. Even for Clara herself. When she arrived in Berlin she could never have imagined what would happen in such a short space of time.

She could never have known how it would transform her. All that mattered now, though, was that no one else should know.

As the story progresses we slowly learn the significance of her death. I was surprised at how women were treated in the new Germany, frowned upon if they smoked in public, encouraged to marry, stay at home and have lots of babies, wear German designed fashion instead of French or Italian.

In contrast the Nazi wives and girlfriends wore gloves from Italy and handmade shoes from Florence. I really liked Clara, though her family thought she was flighty, unreliable and irresponsible.

Even though she didn't enjoy the attentions of one of Hitler's brown shirts, she was persuaded by Leo, a British intelligence officer to spy on him and Magda Goebbels and, gradually, she felt her new identity emerge.

Overall I really enjoyed this book, though sometimes I thought there was too much attention to detail when I just wanted the story to move along at a quicker pace.

From Carole's Book Corner This opens with a prologue, April I sort of don't like when a prologue tells you the ending, and this didn't quite do that.

Instead, the prologue increased the tension of being in Berlin at the beginning of the Nazi regime. Did there need to be more tension?

Have we become so familiar with the Nazis that we need something to heighten our awareness of how truly despicable it was?

This is the This opens with a prologue, April This is the first book of a series, I find. Half German, Clara Vine leaves what we would perceive as the comfort of England and goes to Berlin to pursue an acting career.

Knowing history as we do, this seems an entirely foolhardy thing to do. Of course Clara does not have the wisdom of hindsight.

We learn eventually that Clara is a real stunner, turning men's heads as a matter of routine. So maybe it isn't so far-fetched that she ends up attracting the attention of some of the Nazi top brass - and their wives.

This is fiction, naturally, but situationally, much of this conforms with fact. It was interesting to have real people placed in historical context.

The tension is real enough and the plot itself mostly believable. I say "mostly" because in some ways it did stretch a bit. The best of the characterization is Berlin, but I can accept Clara Vine, though not quite fully-fleshed.

The prose is good enough - I'd never complain, but I won't rave about it either. Both seem to have written about Nazi Germany. While the setting is essentially the same, Kerr is much more hard-edged.

I would find it hard to believe they didn't share research, however. I liked this enough that it falls someplace in my 4-star group, probably about midway.

I'll be glad to put the next in the series on my wish list. View 1 comment. Dec 16, Rob Kitchin rated it liked it. Black Roses is set in Berlin shortly after the Nazis have come to power and are undertaking the first wave of sweeping changes.

The main protagonist is Clara Vine, a young British actress who hopes to establish a career at the Ufa studios.

Shortly after arriving in the city, she falls into the company of senior Nazi wives and enrolled into a new fashion state agency that aims to dress German women in appropriate clothes.

Principled and determined, with little time for the Nazi ethos and beh Black Roses is set in Berlin shortly after the Nazis have come to power and are undertaking the first wave of sweeping changes.

That is made more unpalatable when a British embassy employee, Leo Quinn, asks her to continue to meet the wives and collect and report any interesting information.

Clara, the set-up and the real historical context are intriguing and the story should have fully captured my attention and imagination.

However, I never quite got fully engaged with the tale until the last section. It was just one of those stories that was okay, without being a compelling, immersive read for much of it.

Jan 15, Forthbridge rated it it was ok. If you are interested in preWar Europe this book has a lot to recommend it. The heroine is a well-connected girl who gets in with the Nazi top table - think Unity Mitford with more humanity and brains.

Clara Vine gets involved with an undercover British agent and with her connections to the Goebbels and Ribbentrop families, cosy in their mansions eating dainty cakes and considering German culture as the thugs strut their stuff outside is a promising backdrop for a superior historical thriller.

My If you are interested in preWar Europe this book has a lot to recommend it. My argument with this thriller is that the thrills are doled out too lightly among the piles of period detail.

The tension is built too slowly and not tightly enough. I wish publishers and agents would recommend 'The Day of the Jackal' as compulsory reading for their new authors entering the thriller genre.

Why not start the book with something really interesting that sets the scene for the central problem? Show the guile and the motivations of the forces of darkness and then send in the good guys who get there by one step forward and half step backwards at at first before a tipping point is reached.

The author does start with a corpse in the street wearing the heroine's shoes - which is a good attention grabber, but after that the tension slackens too much and takes too long to resume.

Atmospheric, fast-paced and tense spy novel set in s Germany, which has been sitting on my kindle waiting to be read for way too long.

I only remembered about this after inadvertantly buying book 2 in the series and then getting book 3 from Netgalley without realising the links until fairly late in the day!

I really enjoyed this - and I'm not normally a reader of stuff set in Nazi Germany too depressing - and that enjoyment was partly because I could relax a little, knowing the heroine survi Atmospheric, fast-paced and tense spy novel set in s Germany, which has been sitting on my kindle waiting to be read for way too long.
